Summary

In the follow-up to bestselling psychological thriller The Night Bird, a serial killer mistakenly set free becomes a city’s worst nightmare—and a detective’s deadliest challenge。

Four years after serial killer Rudy Cutter was sent away for life, San Francisco homicide inspector Frost Easton uncovers a terrible lie: his closest friend planted false evidence to put Cutter behind bars。 When he’s forced to reveal the truth, his sister’s killer is back on the streets。

Desperate to take Cutter down again, the detective finds a new ally in Eden Shay。 She wrote a book about Cutter and knows more about him than anyone。 And she’s terrified。 Because for four years, Cutter has been nursing revenge day after stolen day。

Staying ahead of the game of a killer who’s determined to strike again is not going to be easy。 Not when Frost is battling his own demons。 Not when the game is becoming so personal。 And not when the killer’s next move is unlike anything Frost expected。

The Line in the SandRudy Cutter, a serial killer was found guilty because of evidence planted by the police。 Frost is sent on a chase by someone leading him to question his own integrity。 Non-stop action leads to a very surprising ending。

I'm enjoying these mysteries and probably would have given it a 5 star but there was something in the book that didn't mesh with real life cop behavior。 I could be wrong though。 I love the premise that Frost takes care of a little cat whose owner, now dead, left her mansion on Russian Hill to her cat and whomever takes care of him can live there for #1。00 a month。 Interesting read and I enjoy reading about San Francisco since I've never been there。 One more to finish in this series, but all are I'm enjoying these mysteries and probably would have given it a 5 star but there was something in the book that didn't mesh with real life cop behavior。 I could be wrong though。 I love the premise that Frost takes care of a little cat whose owner, now dead, left her mansion on Russian Hill to her cat and whomever takes care of him can live there for #1。00 a month。 Interesting read and I enjoy reading about San Francisco since I've never been there。 One more to finish in this series, but all are well done with good voices。 。。。more

WOW!This is the second Frost book and it was better than the first。 Wonderfully developed characters who are believable。 No "superhero" action but realistic reactions to injuries and situations。 Excellent detective work and deceptively clever twists and turns。 WOW!This is the second Frost book and it was better than the first。 Wonderfully developed characters who are believable。 No "superhero" action but realistic reactions to injuries and situations。 Excellent detective work and deceptively clever twists and turns。 。。。more

This 2nd book in the Frost Easton series was riveting; the reader learns more about the murder of his sister Katie since the murderer is let out of prison because Frost's boss planted evidence。 Now it is a race against time to get this killer back in jail before he murders again。 Read this in 1 day too because I could not put it down!!! How the women were targeted, how Katie was murdered and the sick brain of the murderer kept this thriller in my hands! THE VOICE INSIDE [2018] (Frost Easton Book 2) By Brian FreemanMy Review Five Stars*****I finished this second installment of Freeman’s trilogy of books featuring Frost Easton last night。 Brian Freeman was not a “new-to-me author, having read his standalone THIEF RIVER FALLS and also the popular kick-off to his Frost Easton series THE NIGHT BIRD in May of last year。 I had been underwhelmed by the former, and although I did really enjoy the latter, I wasn’t a fan of the main character of the quirk THE VOICE INSIDE [2018] (Frost Easton Book 2) By Brian FreemanMy Review Five Stars*****I finished this second installment of Freeman’s trilogy of books featuring Frost Easton last night。 Brian Freeman was not a “new-to-me author, having read his standalone THIEF RIVER FALLS and also the popular kick-off to his Frost Easton series THE NIGHT BIRD in May of last year。 I had been underwhelmed by the former, and although I did really enjoy the latter, I wasn’t a fan of the main character of the quirky Frost Easton。 That said, I am honestly not sure why I plucked the second book featuring Frost Easton from my Unread Books on my Kindle。 In any case, I am truly glad that I made that momentous decision。 THE VOICE INSIDE was an outstanding psychological suspense novel that pulled me in from the first page, and more than fulfilled all my high expectations as a chilling and memorable serial killer thriller。 Easton was humanized in this second installment to the extent that I never once thought about my prior assessment of his character as colorfully quirky, implausible, or unlikable。 Freeman earned my total attention and respect as a talented writer of crime fiction in this one。 The alternating POVs were eerily effective, and the author delivered a story line that implored the reader to reflect on his or her own moral imperatives and the ethical questions of right and wrong。 The story was unapologetic in its raw realism of the outcome of Frost’s difficult decision to remain true to his own moral compass and in so doing to literally pull the switch that set in motion the mechanism of a judicial system that would set free a cold-blooded psychopath to hunt and prey upon more innocent women on the streets of San Francisco。 The serial murderer in this one (dubbed The Golden Gate Killer) was well written, refreshingly original, and the author definitely delivered on the sense of immediacy that accompanies the narrative of an outstanding well-crafted tale of the serial slaughter of innocent victims。 The multilayered and complex plot line was appreciated and produced a nearly unputdownable novel。 I quickly became immersed in the atmospheric back drop of the story, Frost’s emotional turmoil, and the well-written believable characters in the novel。 I recognized at the onset that this one was really special and a “page-turner” in spades。 It was one of those story lines that you are just willing the outcome to be positive and yet you are confronted with a raw yet realistic scene of senseless slaughter time and again。 This book was published a few years ago but I am still loath to reveal any spoilers in this review。 I will say that despite the genre designations this novel also generously proves to be a mystery and a “whodunnit” in its own right。 Readers of THE NIGHT BIRD will recall Easton’s deep and haunting loss that followed the senseless slaughter of his sister Katie by the serial killer he sets free in this second installment。 It is a mystery throughout the book how the killer selected his victims, and it was always known that his sister’s murder was an outlier。 Frost Easton strives to investigate the past murders, learn the secret of why his sister’s murder was an anomaly, and to prevent the footloose psychotic slasher from snuffing out the lives of more innocent victims。 This pulse pounding race against the clock [“tick-tock”] is an adrenaline laced trip through the pages。 This novel was a Five Star reading experience before the jaw-dropping plot twist that follows the chilling climax between Easton and the ingenious sociopath holding the knife and ready to shed more blood。 THE VOICE WITHIN solidified this reader as a fan of Freeman。 I am planning to read IMMORAL and his standalone (SPILLED BLOOD) this year。 。。。more

Prompt 43 - A character with a pet cat。 7/52I really love Brian Freeman and this series。 I love how well he writes the characters, how he unravels the story, and just how surprised I am every time。 I am definitely looking forward to #3 and hoping that he writes more in this series。

I’m sure a fan of this series, and of Brian Freeman。 I haven’t read anything from him yet that I haven’t fully loved。 I think what he does so well is write likable characters, I always feel a connection with them。 Great 2nd book in the Frost Easton series, I hope there are many more。

Christina

I loved this book just as much as I loved book 1。 The twist near the end, the family connections。 It was paced well and kept me wanting more! I cant wait to read book 3!

Katerina

As with previous detective Frost story, I did enjoy this one very much。 The story itself if very interesting, vaguely continues with first installment while introducing more of the character。 It could be, however, written separately。 I do not see any need for that is Freemans style of writing is very clever and I enjoy his stories。

Zozo

The author tricked me into thinking I had it all figured out。 I hadn’t。 And then he threw in a twist for good measure。 Thank you!And the crime story isn’t the best thing here。 It’s the characters, the situations。 I find it amazing。

An interesting readI really enjoyed the development of the characters。 I like it when I have to change my mind about a character a few different times while reading。 I do not like San Francisco but the author did paint a beautiful picture of it。

You're a cop, you find evidence that will free a serial killer who killed your sister, and may cause your partner/boss/friend-with-benefits to loose their job, and possibly go to jail。 (hide spoiler)] Maybe not。。。I sometimes have a review section, "My Notable Notes"。 I didn't take any。 Sorry, sometimes I do, too often I don't。 This is A SPOILER。 Sorry。 But I didn't tell you what Frost does about it。 I don't know if that's why the book is called "A Voice Inside", but I'd have some internal dialogue going on, that's certain。 The reason you should read the book though is because this is the proverbial "tip of the iceberg"。 Roller coaster is cliché description of the book, but the shoe fits。If you've read The Night Bird, you're familiar with some of the characters who make their appearances。 There's a new character introduced that throws a bucket of worms into Frost's family relationships, and she's one of the good guys。I do happen to know that some authors get up in the morning and think, "How will I torture my hero today?" Not sure if Mr。 Freeman does that, but I can imagine he does。 Alternately, and this is specific to the audiobook, if Frost is supposed to be Jason Bourne, Orphan X, or James Bond type of character, Joe Barrett, the narrator doesn't pull it off。 He's not even Dirty Harry。 The audiobook voice makes Frost sound perpetually calm even when the words are describing a full blown fit。 Frost sounds calm and collected while the words are shouting otherwise。 So while I like the audiobook, I don't think the narrator does the character any favors。 I suspect if I read the book without narration, I'd have a different experience altogether。All that said, I still recommend the book。Off topicReally, review is over。 I'm just talking now。 I've always been a voracious reader。 Most my life, no audiobooks。 That was a luxury working folks with families could not afford。 But this applies to movies and TV series as well。 I loved Terry Goodkind's Wizard's First Rule books。 The TV series。。。 I'm thinking what? No seriously? This is what you "see" when you read those books? This guy doesn't fit, nor does that character or that one。 Outlander series。 I wasn't terribly disappointed with that adaptation, but it isn't what I imagined reading the books。 It's the same with audiobooks with one caveat。 Sometimes, the narrator makes the book so much better than had I just read it。 I complained a bit about Joe Barrett "performing" this book。 Mikael Naramore who I enjoy doing Sam Prichard might have done it different。 I like Dan Bittner for this kind of work。 My point is just as a narrator can read a book, others narrate a story。 I have gone out of my way to obtain any work done by Emily Sutton-Smith after listening to The Nothing Within。 In the end, I encourage you to read, however you can manage to get it done。 Audiobook, ebook, hardcover, fiction, non-fiction。 I've read non-fiction factual books that have been nothing but lies。 I've read fantasies that are more honest and real than any biography or memoir。 I think the best reason to read is to give you pause to think。 I know scientifically the speed of light is "the law", but I know it can be exceeded。 I don't know how I know it, but I'm certain of it while knowing it is not true。 I've read the Bible and hundreds of books about the Bible, but Illusions of a Reluctant Messiah literally had my jaw on the floor because Richard Bach showed me interpretations that made more sense than any expert on the Bible had bothered to mention。 Not that he said anything contrary to anything I had previously read, he just saw it in ways I did not have the ability to imagine。 When he opened my imagination that way, much of what his fiction was saying about what a messiah would say made "religion" true in ways only the scientist in me could grasp。More about me here。View all my Goodreads reviews["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more
